     A. Heinze, University of Hawaii, reports that images obtained with a
0.5-m f/2 Schmidt telescope at Mauna Loa, HI, USA, in the course of the
"Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System" (ATLAS) project, show that
comet 243P abruptly brightened by at least 2.5 magnitudes over the two-day
interval Dec. 10-12, during which both its heliocentric and geocentric
distances were increasing. Continuing observations to determine the nature
and evolution of the outburst are highly desirable.
CCD magnitudes reported to the Central Bureau: Dec. 9.43 UT, 17.7 (K.
Kadota, Ageo, Japan, 0.25-m reflector); Dec. 10.38, 18.8 (Heinze, o-band,
which is approximately an r+i filter); Dec. 12.34, 15.4 (Heinze, g+r filter).

superseded by text appearing later in the printed IAU Circulars.
