The Minor Planet Electronic Circulars contain information on unusual
minor planets and routine data on comets. They are published
on behalf of Division F of the International Astronomical Union by the
Minor Planet Center, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory,

IAWN Planetary Defense Exercise: Apophis
As noted in MPEC 2020-W46, the MPC is supporting an International
Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) planetary defense exercise,
coordinated by Vishnu Reddy (U. Arizona), focused on Apophis during
its upcoming approach. See iawn.net for more information.
To that end, the MPC has treated any reported observations that were
not labeled as (99942) Apophis, or 2004 MN4, as if they were of an unknown
minor planet. As stated, if the criteria for posting to the NEOCP were
satisfied (digest2 score > 65), the observations would be posted to the NEO
Confirmation Page under a temporary designation assigned by the observer(s).
Otherwise, the observations would be inserted into the Isolated Tracklet
File (ITF).
Over the past few weeks, a number of surveys have reported unidentified
observations of Apophis. These observations have all had low digest score.
Yesterday, the NEOWISE team reported N00hp15, an unlabeled Apophis tracklet
with ten observations, spanning more than a day. For the past several months,
the MPC's standard procedure for processingunidentified NEOWISE tracklets
has been to post those with NEO-like orbitsto the NEOCP to encourage
additional observations and to obtain optical magnitudes. That was the case
for N00hp15, which met the criteria for designation thanks to follow-up and
precovery observations.
The Apophis discovery exercise is now complete. We thank the NEO search
and follow up communities for their help. The MPC will revert to normal
processing of Apophisobservations, while the remainder to the IAWN Apophis
exercise continues. The observations below will be regularly published
in the next DOU MPEC.
