2014 UN_271
     G. Bernstein and P. Bernardinelli, University of Pennsylvania, reported
astrometry spanning 20 nights from 2014 Oct. 20-2018 Nov. 8 of an asteroidal
object that they found in CCD exposures obtained with the 4.0-m reflector
at Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory in the course of the "Dark Energy
Survey", and which they reported as a previously unknown member of the Oort
Cloud.  Selected observations from MPEC 2021-M53 are tabulated below.
Magnitudes were given as follows:  2014 Oct. 20.29 UT, r = 22.5; Nov. 4.12,
z = 22.0; Dec. 11.12, i = 21.9; 2015 Jan. 9.11, z = 22.8; Aug. 17.36, r =
22.2, g = 22.6; 2016 Jan. 11.09, r = 22.1; 11.10, g = 22.9; Oct. 1.30, r =
21.6, g = 22.0; 2017 Oct. 15.27, g = 22.0; 15.34, z = 21.2, r = 21.6; Dec.
15.18, r = 22.0, g = 22.4; 2018 Oct. 27.18, z = 21.4; Nov. 8.24, r = 21.6,
i = 21.6, g = 22.2.

S. Deen (Simi Valley, CA, USA) writes that he has identified pre-discovery
images of 2014 UN_271 in publicly available CCD observations obtained (via
a program led by K. J. Meech, University of Hawaii) with the Canada-France-
Hawaii Telescope at Mauna Kea on 2014 Aug. 28; the object appeared completely
stellar in SDSS i-, r-, g-, and u-band exposures obtained in 0".9-1".0 seeing.
Deen reports magnitudes i = 21.7, r = 22.1-22.2 (two exposures), g = 23.0,
and u = 23.6 for 2014 UN_271 on that night, indicating a noticeably red
color (e.g., g-r = +0.8).  Deen's astrometry is tabulated below.

     The following orbital elements by S. Nakano (CBAT) are from 37
observations spanning 2014 Aug. 28-2018 Nov. 8 (mean residual 0".07), with
corresponding original and future values of 1/a being +0.000040 and +0.000026
AU^-1, respectively.  The eccentricity of the object with respect to the
solar-system barycenter is slightly hyperbolic from around 1994 (r = 53 AU;
e= 1.0000006) until around 2086 (r = 73 AU; e= 1.0000018).  The object is
likely to be a comet from the outer edge of the Oort Cloud.

The following ephemeris by the undersigned from the above orbital elements
uses photometric power-law parameters H = 4.0 and 2.5n = 7.5 for the
magnitudes.  These parameters reasonably fit the reported magnitudes and
suggest a peak total apparent (visual) magnitude of around 17 during the
years surrounding perihelion.
